Abstract

Literature concerning wives of alcoholics has changed its focus dramatically during the past fifty years, moving through three different trends. The earliest model, called the "disturbed personality model," was the dominant point of view from the 1930's into the 1950's. It held that a woman who is in some way psychologically maladjusted - dependent, hostile, domineering, masochistic, sadistic - marries the alcoholic to fulfill her own neurotic needs.
