Abstract

In 1983 Time magazine named the computer its "Machine of the Year," and declared, "The 'information revolution' that futurists have long predicted has arrived, bringing with it the promise of dramatic changes in the way people live and work, and perhaps even in the way they think. America will never be the same" {"Computer Moves In," 1983, p. 14). Computers are now standard equipment in the majority of schools. Collis (1988) reports on a 1986 survey that showed 85 percent of the elementary schools, 95 percent of the junior high schools, and 97 percent of the senior high schools in the U.S. have at least one computer used for instruction.
