Abstract
The rate of adolescent suicide has increased dramatically over the past few decades (Allen, 1987; Crumley, 1979; Garland & Zigler, 1993; Garrison, Lewinsohn, Marsteller, Langhinrichsen & Lann, 1991; Hendin, 1987; Henry, Stephenson, Hanson & Hargett, 1993) . The most dramatic increase is among 15 -24 year olds. It is third leading cause of death of adolescents in the United States, after accidents and homicides (Henry et al., 1993; U.S. Bureau of Census, 1991 ). Over 5,000 suicides occur in this age group each year, averaging 14 per day (Henry et al., 1993). The suicide rate among adolescents increased much more dramatically than suicide in the general population. It rose by more than 200% compared with a general population increase of 17% in one given year (Garland & Zigler, 1993).
