Abstract
The focus of my studio/thesis work has been to produce actual publications and a package design through the use of the computer. I strove to fulfill the desires of my clients while maintaining a high level of design. To organize the discussion of my work of the past year, I have grouped slides into five categories: work done for the Gallery of Art at the University of Northern Iowa, a computer illustration, Cedar Falls/Waterloo events, UNI events, and work done for FroKrunch (a small business which began in Cedar Falls, Iowa). From August 1990 to May 1991. I designed all of the announcements for the Gallery of Art at UNI. The first announcement was for the Hog Oilers Exhibition (1). The challenge I faced in designing most of the announcements for the Gallery of Art was how to effectively combine images from three simultaneous but dissimilar exhibitions in the same brochure. For example, the Hog Oilers Exhibition was accompanied by a photo exhibition, and a collaborative drawing and poetry exhibition. In this case I united the images by having the brochure printed in black. This gave an aged appearance to the photos and frames them in black. Designing with the use of only one color due to the cost of printing was another challenge I faced with designing the Gallery of Art announcements. In many cases I used screens of a color on a colored paper to give the impression of a second color. An example of this is the Cham Hendon. Robert Fichter. and Joann Schnabel Exhibitions Announcement (2). A 1/4" edge of paper is left around the outside of the announcement to frame the text and images. However, this border is violated in two places by solid areas of color. I did this to emphasize a specific quote and to give depth to the announcement. Two of the Gallery of Art projects which I most enjoyed creating were The Magic Silver Show catalogue cover (3), and The Magic Silver Show announcement (4). I was not provided with images so I created a graphic image in the computer. In each case the silver film is angled across the front and used straight across on the back. Through the blending of screens from dark to light in the computer, the film gives the illusion of having depth and seems to be floating above the other elements on the page. The Yoshishige Furukawa (5), Sally Hutchison (6), and Drawing Beyond Nature (7) exhibition announcements were mailed in one envelope. For these exhibitions we printed separate announcements rather than combining the three exhibitions into one. This was made possible due to a collaboration between a New York gallery and the Gallery of Art for the Yoshishige Furukawa announcement (5). This also enabled us to put a four-color image on the front of the Furukawa announcement. The Sally Hutchison announcement (6) is done in the form of a postcard, with a painting by the artist on one side. On the other side of the announcement, I chose to have the type mimic the repetition of line in her painting. The Drawing Beyond Nature announcement (7) is done entirely with type. Also in a postcard format, the artists' names are reversed in blue on one side, and the exhibition information is on the other side. The final announcement I created for the Gallery of Art was for four faculty members in the Department of Art at UNI. The Summer Solos exhibition announcement (8) uses type and geometric forms. The computer is a helpful tool when creating hard edged black and white illustrations. After first sketching out the Theater Logo (9) by hand, I used an illustration program to duplicate it in the computer. This illustration was created for the Theater Topics magazine, but was not used. The two Cedar Falls/Waterloo symposia I designed for were the Public Art. Beyond the Sum of its Parts, and the Virginia Woolf/Dominick Argento Symposium. I designed a brochure and a poster for the Public Art Symposium. To reflect the title, Beyond the Sum of its Parts, I used a flattened geometric solid across the front of the announcement (10), which could be cut out and assembled as a three-dimensional solid. I also used a pattern made up of geometric designs as a decorative device. The inside of the announcement (11) and the poster (12). The announcement for the Virginia Woolf/Dominick Argento Symposium (13) was designed after the poster illustration by Prof. Roy Behrens. The announcement alternates solid pages with reversed type and the paper with solid type. Two posters done for the University of Northern Iowa were the Art Scholarship, Call For Entries poster (14), and the Film Series poster(15) .The layout for the Art Scholarship poster was designed to complement the illustration by Osie Johnson. The Film Series poster uses xeroxed images as well as computer graphics and type. A great learning experience for me was designing for the FroKrunch frozen yogurt company. The heart is used in the design to reflect that it is a healthy product and that there is a "lot of love" put into the making of the product. The FroKrunch Sampling Brochure (16) was created for distribution at yogurt sampling sessions to educate consumers on the product. As well as being used as a decorative pattern, the heart is used as a spot illustration in the text to add emphasis to "good for you". A broken heart emphasizes the poor health attributes of ice cream when compared to frozen yogurt. The FroKrunch logo on the brochure (16), stationery (17), and business card (18), is modified in the later package design (19-21). In the package design (19-21) the hearts become less of a pattern and more a part of the actual logo. The letters in the word FroKrunch are also shadowed and curved to give them a softer edge and more feminine appeal. I added this more feminine look to the package because women from the ages of 18 to 45 are the largest group of consumers of frozen yogurt products. Unfortunately the company did not have the funds to remain in business and so the package was never printed. The work I completed at the University of Northern Iowa helped bridge the gap between school and entering the business market place. I currently work for an advertising agency in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I will include some professional work in my show in December.
