Abstract
It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the reasons why the German state organized on a kleindeutsch basis and the forces which affected this decision. The word kleindeutsch, as it will be used in this investigation, means the territory which comprised Germany in the year 1871 plus the spirit behind the movement to make Germany a state for "pure" Germans. The term grossdeutsch, as it will be used in this investigation, means the territory which comprised Germany in 1871 plus Austria and the spirit behind the movement for one large federal government which might include some non-German people.
