Abstract

The products of the aquation of trans-bromobis- + (ethylenediamine)nitritochromium(III), trans-[CrBr(ONO)(en) 2 ] , cation in 0.001 F HC1O4 were separated by cation-exchange chromatography on Dowex AGS0W-X8 and Sephadex SP-C-25-120 columns. Visible absorption spectra and analyses of nitrite to chromium and bromide to chromium molar ratios were used to identify the products. It was found that trans-bromobis- (ethylenediamine)nitritochromium(III) cation reacted rapidly in 0.001 F HC1O4 at room temperature, releasing both nitrite and bromide ions. The primary aquation product was found to be a mixture, probably containing both cis- and transisomers of aquabromobis(ethylenediamine)chromium(III), [CrBr(H2 O)(en) 2] 2+, and aquabis(ethylenediamine)nitritochromium(III), [Cr(ONO) (H 2 O) (en) 2] 2+, cations. The secondary aquation product was found to be mostly cis-diaquabis- (ethylenediamine)chromium(III), [Cr(H2 o) 2 (en) 2] 3+, cation. The pseudo-first order rate constant for the aquation in 0.001 F HC1O 4 at room temperature was estimated to be 1.9 x 10- 3 sec- 1 , which gives the acid-dependent rate constant kH a value of 1.9 M- 1sec- 1 .
