Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to describe verbally a series of personal involvements in painting. These involvements have taken place over a period of nine years and are concerned with seeking solutions to problems which have become apparent by direct and personal experiences. Two major questions which evolved over this period of years form the body of the thesis. The first question was, am I working with a medium which can best reflect my personal aims? The second, could I solve the problems of color within the medium of painting to my own satisfaction? While searching for the answers to these questions I worked in several media, oil paint, sculpture, pencil and ink drawings, watercolor, collage, photography and polymer acrylic paints. Sculpture gave me a more solid understanding of spacial relationships being an area where color was not a dominant factor. A concentrated effort in the area of drawing heightened my sensitivity in line and composition. Working with watercolor helped me with form and allowed me to work with color in a faster and more fluid manner. Collage, using watercolor, drawing and photograph fragments suggested new possibilities in composition by allowing me to move more massive forms about on the surface of the work. Fast drying polymer acrylic paints allowed me to work in collage at a speed and flexibility which I desired.
