Abstract
The problem of this study was to determine a priority order ranking of predetermined competencies for secretarial education teachers as perceived by Iowa secondary secretarial education teachers for the purpose of contributing to the development of teacher education curriculums. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire mailed to the school addresses of 282 secretarial teachers employed in Iowa secondary schools. The questionnaire consisted of 51 competencies within 7 classifications and one grouping of the 7 classifications of competencies. Teachers were asked to rank individual competencies in a priority order within a predetermined classification. Teachers were also asked to provide personal and professional characteristics such as sex, total years of teaching experience, total years of business experience, and the student population of the school in which they were teaching. These four personal and professional characteristics were used as variables in the interpretation of the data. Analysis of responses for each competency was made in terms of frequencies and mean values. The competencies were ranked according to their mean value and then analyzed according to each of the four selected variables to determine whether there were any statistically significant differences at the .05 level. The ranking by the teachers indicates that the competencies concerned with understanding the student and the learning situation were of the most concern. Teachers responding to the questionnaire were also concerned with building good rapport with students and with having an ability to teach classes with heterogeneous groupings. Of the classifications of competencies, the areas of understanding the student and the learning situation, classroom organization and management, and methodology and techniques of teaching were considered to be more important than selecting, developing, and using instruction materials and equipment, curriculum planning, and testing and evaluation competencies. Teachers viewed the area of personal and professional competencies as the area of least concern. A knowledge of current research available, an ability to interpret the findings of studies, and an ability to use library resources were consistently ranked last. These results imply that pre-service education for secretarial teachers should include the psychology of learning and particularly an understanding of how students learn. Also, human relations and personal relations classes should be included in the curriculum. In general, Iowa secretarial teachers were more concerned with students as people and how to assist students to learn than other aspects of the teaching profession.
