Abstract

This study of the butterflies of Iowa collates published records with data obtained from institutional and private collections throughout the state, together with the author's records compiled during the 1969 and 1970 collecting seasons. Results are presented in the forms of an annotated checklist, tabular comparisons with adjacent states, and maps. One hundred thirty species are recorded from the state, and geographic and temporal distributions are given for each. Fourteen previously recorded species are removed from the state list. Twenty-two species which were recorded in collections of 50 years ago have not been collected since. This may indicate that the butterfly fauna of Iowa is decreasing in variety with time, and argues for more continual monitoring of biological systems to ascertain significant changes.
