Abstract

The writer is a member of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Since a knowledge of some of the history and beliefs of this denomination is essential for an understanding of the problem undertaken, it will be necessary to explain them to some extent. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was founded on April 6,1830, by Joseph Smith on the premise that God, being unchangeable, can and does communicate His will to men on earth now, as in former days. Because of their peculiar social and religious philosophy and the need for self-protection in a hostile environment, the people of this church tended to band together. After the death of Joseph Smith in 1844 the people of the church scattered, with a large part following Brigham Young to Utah. Many of those who remained in the Midwest felt that Young and his followers had strayed from the original tenets of the religion, and effected a reorganization in 1860 at Plano, Illinois, under the leadership of Joseph Smith Jr., the son of the founder. This group, The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, claims true succession to the original church on the grounds of continuing tradition, beliefs, and practices.
