Abstract

The current emphasis which the "atomic age" has placed upon the education of "gifted" or "talented" pupils in science and mathematics has provided educators with an opportunity to devise and implement new and unique programs in the elementary and secondary schools. Educators have utilized two approaches in meeting the challenge--acceleration and enrichment. Many secondary schools in all parts of the United States are offering pupils opportunity to take more advanced course work than the traditional curriculum had allowed. College courses, as well as high school subjects, are being offered at the high school level both during the regular academic year and during the summer . Perhaps of greater interest and potential usefulness to meeting the demands of the nation's technological effort and satisfying the desire of the nation's gifted youth for learning are the experimental programs being originated by state colleges and universities, often with the support of the federal government through the National Science Foundation.
