Abstract

The sedentary lifestyles of some children have led to negative consequences for present and long-term health. Schools have the potential to improve the health of youth by providing positive enjoyable learning environments that promote physical activity outside school. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of perceived physical competence, exercise intensity, and body mass index to enjoyment in physical education among elementary students. The sample consisted of 56 fourth and fifth grade students enrolled at Grundy Center Elementary School in Iowa. A self-report questionnaire was used to ascertain information regarding children's enjoyment during participation in physical education class as well as their perceived physical competence. The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) and the Children's Physical Activity Correlates (CPAC) were administered as the instruments. Heart rate monitoring was used to determine children's effort or exercise intensity during physical education class, and body mass index was established as a measure of relative body fatness. The Pearson product-moment correlation statistical test was used to determine the relationship between all the variables of interest (i.e. perceived physical competence, exercise intensity, and body mass index) and enjoyment in school physical education. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine which variables independently or in combination with others, best predicted enjoyment during physical education classes. No significant relationships were found between those variables (i.e. perceived physical competence, exercise intensity, and body mass index) and enjoyment in physical education
