Abstract

Qual per ignoto calle, named for the incipit of the first line of text, is a solo chamber cantata by Antonio Vivaldi. He composed the piece for alto voice and continuo, which will be realized on the piano. This cantata consists of two recitative-aria pairs.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was a composer of many genres, best known for his instrumental writing, especially in concerti. Little was known of his secular works until the 1960s, where the discovery of his chamber cantatas was made, of which he only wrote about 37. His chamber cantatas exemplify similar compositional techniques utilized in his instrumental writing, such as virtuosic melismas. Vivaldi used melismas and vocal effects to highlight and evoke the meaning of the text. Qual per ignoto calle tells and lives through the story about the storm (pain and torment) of loving someone, resolving that at the end of the storm, there is a beautiful, radiant light (love).
