Abstract
The keeping of books as financial records has long been the backbone of the expanse and variety of human activities commonly known as "business". Financial records are important as historical records; as a source of information for creditors, owners and investors; and as a tool with which management can analyze business. Double-entry bookkeeping, which forms the basis of many formal bookkeeping courses, is based on fundamental principles which date back to the days of early Mediterranean commerce. These principles were first set forth in 1494 by Lucas Paccioli in the oldest treatise ever printed or written on the subject of bookkeeping.
