Abstract

This project created a comprehensive, high-resolution photographic guide for identifying the 23-known species of fiddler crabs inhabiting the coastal regions of Europe, East Africa, North America, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America. The primary objective is to produce clear, detailed images that highlight key morphological features necessary for accurate species identification. These images will serve as an accessible reference for educators, students, and scientists involved in biodiversity studies, ecological monitoring, and conservation efforts. It will be available to the general public world-wide, at the ScholarWorks web page by the University of Northern Iowa’s Rod Library, https://scholarworks.uni.edu/fiddlercrabs/ By improving the ease and accuracy of field identification for these animals, this project contributes to the broader goals of species documentation and ecosystem research.
