Abstract
Caves are an extreme environment on Earth and share many properties as extraterrestrial bodies. Due to the extreme and hostile environment of caves they have been used as analogs for understanding how life could be sustained on other planets. Organic materials that show evidence of life often fluoresce and therefore can be studied using ultraviolet spectroscopy. One place where fluorescence can be measured in caves is within the water. Water within caves has a very low concentration of organics due to the extreme conditions in which extremophiles can only survive. However, it is difficult to study these extreme environments as they are not suitable for humans. To overcome this issue the development of a spectrometer that can be deployed and continuously collect data will remove the need for constant human monitoring and allow for more data to be collected, and long-term water studies to be achieved.
