Abstract

Green sand molding operation remains the primary molding operation in producing high quantity. Castings are primarily used for the automotive, agriculture, and construction industry. Examples of some Iowan foundry operations using this type of molding system are John Deere in Waterloo, Progressive Foundry in Perry, and Viking Pump in Cedar Falls. Though each of these foundries use the same basic molding process, namely, sand, clay, and water, termed green sand. The production equipment, size, and metal poured requires unique quality conditions and mixtures to optimize quality.
