Abstract

The purpose of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of individuals with disabilities and how to support them in mathematics classrooms. This project will be beneficial to me as a future educator and to my future colleagues who may want ideas about how to best support individuals with disabilities. This work is important to share because not all teachers receive courses specifically on teaching students with disabilities in math class. For example, I found that in my teacher education program, I only had one class that discussed individuals with disabilities called “Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners.” I learned more about individuals with disabilities in this class; however, it was not a course that was specific to math teaching. My research will be beneficial to understanding how teachers can provide better support to students with disabilities in the math classroom, especially given that math is often visual in nature and relies heavily on spatial reasoning, symbolic representations, and graphing. This research will not only benefit the teachers who have students with disabilities in their classrooms, but will also benefit all teachers and will allow teachers to improve their instructional strategies and practices for all students.
