Europe is one of the four sculpture groups on the Albert Memorial representing a continent. It was designed and sculpted by Patrick MacDowell (1799-1870). At the center of the group stands a large bull, signifying the high cattle populations in Europe. A symbolic woman holding an orb and scepter that represent European royalty rides on the back of the bull, representing the Greek myth of Europa’s abduction by Zeus. On the four corners of the pedestal sit four other symbolic women holding various objects of importance to European culture. The five women all wear crowns and long dresses.
