Abstract
Gamification can be used to motivate students in the classroom. This review examines the effects of Gamification on student motivation as measured by student achievement. Twenty-six peer-reviewed research studies and four literature reviews published between 2001-2018 were selected for this analysis. The reviewed research studies indicated that gamification could increase student motivation, primarily when used over a short period. Research also found that students perceived an increase in motivation in a gamified class. Future research into the effects of gamification on student motivation is recommended for the primary and secondary levels.
