Abstract

Two of the main pathways for individuals to access recovery services are clinical and community-based. The clinical model focuses on medical stabilization and treatment, followed by community-based care that provides peer-driven support and sustainability through connection. The purpose is to examine how recovery models aim to support those in recovery and pinpoint the ways they can integrate medical and social systems to meet client needs. Comparing the two will allow us to understand how each model supports sustained recovery and overall well-being. The question that will be researched in this study is: How do acute clinical treatment and community- based recovery capital individually and collectively influence recovery outcomes among individuals with Substance Use Disorder?

The research design of this study utilizes a qualitative method. The findings will be based on semi-structured interviews of those who have participated in both clinical and peer- based services, as well as those who have received only one type of service. There will be questions regarding the effectiveness and the role of medical and social supports in sustaining recovery. It will also look at what type of recovery model individuals utilized for their primary care, and if they utilized other resources outside of that chosen path.

It is anticipated that community- based recovery models will be strong in providing connection, support, and long-term recovery sustainability. For the clinical model, it is anticipated that it will be critical for individuals early within their recovery for stabilization and the early onset of treatment. The implications for social work will come into play with service coordination, advocating with holistic and client- centered approaches, and resource development to bridge gaps between peer-driven and medical-based practice.
