Abstract
The invention and extensive usage of digital electronics, microprocessors, and communication networks has resulted in significant changes to the process of gathering information. One indication of this is the popularity of the Internet, or aptly named information highway. Another indication is the increased availability of low cost equipment to gather, process, and transfer data (Masi, 1999). The measurement professional now has a large variety of hardware, software, and communication protocols from which to choose to best fit an application. These applications may require the use of a networked data acquisition device. This study was prompted by the need to evaluate and categorize these types of devices.
