Abstract
When the Cedar Rapids Community School District selected a new science curriculum for the fall of 2007, questions arose about how this new curriculum compared with the old curriculum. The new curriculum is similar to the old curriculum when compared by content standards and benchmarks but when the curricula as a whole are compared there are some differences. The seventh grade content curriculum did not experience many significant changes since the new curriculum still covers a large amount of Earth science. Specifically both curricula covered rocks so I decided to focus my research study on comparing the two curricula and their coverage of the content of rocks and the rock cycle.
The Cedar Rapids School District requires seventh graders to complete a district wide science test each year. Seventh graders are tested on their knowledge of the rock cycle and the ability to identify rocks by characteristics. With the start of a new curriculum there were questions about how the test would work with this new curriculum. Consequently, the district decided not to administer a formal district wide test during the 2007-2008 school year. My investigation will look at student performance on the district test after completing the activities from the new curriculum.
