Abstract

The Reasons for Seasons is a 3rd grade Earth science unit that was constructed with the 5E learning cycle lesson plan. Using learning cycles with the inclusion of inquiry based learning is a great way to move from a teacher-centered classroom to a student- centered classroom. The unit was created following the Masters of Arts in Science Education course work. The course work gave a great deal of insight to the development of this unit. The unit is based in district standards and the Iowa Core Curriculum, an active science reform that provides a guide for teachers to deliver meaningful, rigorous content, and includes effective teaching strategies. This unit consists of learning cycles covering description, characteristics, and reasons for seasons, spanning 12 to 16 days.
