Abstract
Nuclear chemistry is a topic that is relevant to all areas of science, but often left out of the curriculum due to a lack of time or the belief by teachers that it can be covered in someone elses course. If we are to help students become scientifically literate, the basic science of nuclear chemistry and its numerous applications must be addressed at some point in the curriculum. An important part of the local history of Ames is its involvement in the Manhattan Project by the Department of Energy Ames Lab. By creating a unit that deals with some of the local issues involving nuclear chemistry, students will see the importance and relevance of this area of science and how it affects their everyday lives. The National Science Education Standards refer to the importance of a scientifically literate society. One of the specific goals of the Standards is "to educate students who are able to engage intelligently in public discourse and debate about matters of scientific and technological concern." (NSES, p. 1) Concepts related to the study of nuclear chemistry are also part of the 9-12 content standards. (NSES, p. 178)
