Abstract

Currently in science education, there is a push to get away from the traditional methods and teach science in a more student centered way through the use of inquiry. Teaching in a student centered way is not a new idea, but rather one that has been around at least the last 200 years, and probably much longer. The current student centered push to include inquiry is supported by the National Science Education Standards (National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council, 2000). Even with the direction given by the National Standards, the teachers need to effectively implement inquiry in their classrooms in order to truly make a change. Having inquiry based curriculums available for teachers to use will only help increase their use in the classrooms. Development and evaluation of these curricular materials would help teachers make informed decisions on what materials would work in their particular situation. The goal of this project is to evaluate the implementation of an inquiry approach in a ninth grade physical science classroom. The project will examine the effectiveness of the approach in increasing the students' ability to think scientifically and it will also examine the process of implementing this curriculum into the classroom.
