Abstract
The purpose of this study was to design a physical education program effective to reduce obesity in moderate to mild mentally retarded children. The program was designed for two self-contained classrooms of moderately mentally retarded students ages 16-21 from Atlantic community schools in Iowa. The program consisted of aerobic-type activities, was written for one semester, and included one-week units of 45-minute daily periods. An assessment sheet was developed to record data for evaluation purposes. It included height, weight, age, resting heart rate, exercise heart rate, percent body fat, and the 300 yd run/walk time. The assessment was to be given the first day of the program, after nine weeks, and at the end of the semester.
It was suggested that the study be presented to the Atlantic School Board for approval so the program may be implemented. The program would be up-dated periodically as results from research become available.
