Abstract

Students, aged 18 to 25, face many responsibilities and challenges such as social development, higher education activities, vocational activities, living arrangements, seeking marital bonds, and developing economic independence. For the college and university student, it is a major stage as a young adult to pursue a higher educational goal and to learn new ways of relating to other students before stepping into a real job environment (Prendergast, 1994). However, along with their responsibilities and personal development, young people might be exposed to negative sides of adulthood. While the majority of college students are responsible for maintaining positive health, it is not uncommon for some to become involved in negative health behaviors such as drinking, smoking, and using illicit drugs. Under the name of college culture, heavy drinking and substance abuse have been allowed by the campus administrators and communities, yet tolerance of these behaviors has resulted in various problems and disputes on campus and in the community (Bowen, 1988).
