Abstract

Recruitment and retention of staff is a key component to the success of any organization. Organizational survival and growth is dependent upon attracting, recruiting and retaining quality staff, both paid and volunteer. It is imperative that any organization effectively recruit as well as retain the staff that they have invested time and money in developing. Within an organization, the longer an individual is involved or employed, the more knowledge, responsibility and leadership are developed to assist in furthering the mission and goals of the organization. In addition to paid staff, volunteers should be highly recruited, carefully selected, and worked to retain within an organization. Camp Adventure™ Child & Youth Services (CACYS) uses a multifaceted recruitment and hiring process with their volunteer staff.

This study focused on the recruitment and retention of volunteer staff within the CACYS program. This study determined current practices for recruitment and retention of long-term volunteer staff in CACYS. More specifically the study discovered recruitment methods, procedures, and practices, which attracted the students into the program initially. The top five recruiting techniques were found to be: l)"a friend participated," 2) "family/parents" 3) "classroom presentations" 4) "flyer/table tent" 5) "friend asked me to do it with them."

The study also determined what factors were crucial to students continued participation, or retention in the program. It was determined there is a significant association between continued participation and gender, with males having a significantly better first experience in the program than females. It was also determined there is a significant association between continued participation and participants' number of field experiences in the program. Participants with five or more field experiences agrees with the following questions significantly more than those with three or four field experiences: 1) "has shaped my future/current career;" 2) "helps expand my skills and abilities;" 3) "is a leadership development opportunity;" 4) "provides opportunity for meaningful work" and 5) "provides opportunity for promotion." All five of these significant associations occur in the personal growth section of continued participation. These results show that more field experiences in the program can significantly increase a participants' personal growth.
