Abstract
The purpose of this article is to look at the academic achievement gap between black and white students. The author analyzed a school in the Ohio area that prides itself on the excellence of its school system however the black students that school 'lag' significantly behind that of their white peers. The author states that "the so called "liberal interpretation" of is that this gap is the result of economic disparities between the two ethnic communities that can be traced back to the legacy of slavery and other forms of oppression." (p.10) "The so called conservative view is that economic factors are NOT the cause of the gap because some Asians that are economically worse off than African Americans excel in school." (p.10) The author believes that this is a shallow analysis and the achievement gap is very serious and analyses like these cause more harm than good because they make people choose between two unsavory options. The author believes that the problem is not hopeless; researchers must start looking at the problem in new and deep ways and avoid the temptation to seek simplistic one-shot solutions.
