Abstract
Recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (1976-1980 and 2003- 2006) indicated that the prevalence of obesity in children ages 6 to 11 years has increased from 6.5% to 17% (Babkes Stellino, Sinclair, Partridge, & McClary, 2010). An additional 20.4% of 6 to 11 year olds and 15.3% of 12 to 19 year olds were considered overweight in 2004 (Lee, Burgeson, Fulton, & Spain, 2007). Childhood obesity can lead to several complications including heart disease, diabetes, and low self-esteem (Beaulieu, Butterfield, & Pratt, 2009). Regular physical activity plays a crucial role in increasing physical fitness in obese children as well as decreasing the degree of overweight among obese children (CDC, 1997). However, Fairclough, Beighle, Erwin & Ridgers (2012) found that only 42% of children aged 6-12 years and 8% of 12-19 year-olds meet daily physical activity recommendations of 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
