Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the three main coaching styles utilized by basketball coaches. Coaches are constantly trying to find ways to improve their coaching style, and solidify that coaching personality which will produce the maximum results. Since the inception of basketball over one hundred years ago, the style of basketball coaching has paralleled teaching styles of the same era being somewhat authoritarian and dictatorial in nature. It appears that the trend over the last ten to fifteen years has witnessed modifications based on more cooperative techniques between coaches and athletes. Athletes have also appeared to have changed throughout this time period, resulting in the need for greater sensitivity from coaches and a coaching style that embraces the personality of the contemporary athlete.
