Abstract
Today, nonprofit organizations are constantly competing with public agencies. In order to better serve their customers, and therefore staying competitive with these businesses, nonprofit organizations must conduct evaluations regularly to determine in which areas their resources are being efficiently utilized. In addition, evaluations can help managers in decision-making processes. Many types of evaluations are available to analyze the customer's perspectives on the program and services of organizations. One evaluation tool that has been utilized in many fields of study is the Importance Performance Analysis.
The purpose of the study is to conduct a comprehensive literature review focused on the topic of the Importance Performance Analysis and its applications to the World Leisure Organization. The study will review pertinent literature regarding the use of the Importance Performance Analysis as an evaluation tool as well as its methodological applications. In addition, the study will review pertinent literature related to the Importance Performance Analysis and its application to commercial, government and nonprofit organizations. Further, the study will examine the literature related to the application of the Importance Performance Analysis in parks, recreation, leisure and tourism. Last, the study will discuss ways in which the Importance Performance Analysis has been applied to WLO.
The results of the literature review are analyzed in an organized fashion. Matrilla and James (1977) have provided the initial framework for the application of the Importance Performance Analysis evaluation tool. Wade and Eagles (2003) report that Importance Performance Analysis is a useful tool in evaluating the programs and services of government agencies, commercial businesses and nonprofit organizations. It has also been applied in parks, recreation, leisure and tourism organizations. A number of authors have discussed the simplicity, reliability and relatively low cost of the Importance Performance Analysis and its application in a variety of settings in countries throughout the world including Tanzania (Wade & Eagles, 2003); India (Hema & Sammuel, 2011); Australia (Coghlan, 2012); China (Lai & To, 2010 and Zhang, 2012); Taiwan (Chen & Lin, 2013); Switzerland (Mueller & Kaurmann, 2001); and Kenya (Obonyo, Ayieko & Kambona, 2013).
