Abstract
Swimming is one of the most popular leisure activities in the United States. However, there has been very little research conducted on specialized training programs that have been developed outside of the certificate programs offered by such organizations as the American Red Cross. It is evident that there is a need to develop program specific staff development programs, especially in settings coupled with day and resident camp programs. The Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services program is one such organization that engages in swimming activities as a part of its camp program offerings. As such, the creation of an organized staff development program to address this population is the focus of this research project.
Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services has a rich history of providing aquatic programs. Aquatics services offered by the organization are dated to 1987 when Learn-to-Swim lessons were provided to the Eighth US Army in Korea. From the inception of the aquatic programs serving one command with 10 staff members, the activity has grown to involve over 100 individuals. Aquatic programs offered by Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services involve the teaching of swim lessons for children, youth and adults; lifeguarding; aqua aerobics; aqua trim and the coaching of swimming teams. Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services aquatic swim programs are now offered in Asia including Japan and Korea; and in Europe in Germany, Italy and Spain.
The purpose of this study was to develop an aquatic training manual for Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services. Seven (7) core aquatic training modules were developed in the following areas: I) history and fundamental elements of Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services; 2) aquatic songs and games; 3) in-service training and workshops; 4) risk management; 5) American Red Cross required records; 6) aquatics in a military setting; and 7) open water life guarding. In addition, the study involved the creating of aquatic related homework assignments aligned with the core aquatic training modules. The core aquatic training modules were implemented into a 10-week training program. Each of the core modules provides information regarding goals, objectives and content.
In addition to the core aquatic training modules, information contained in the research project includes other relevant documentation required to implement the Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services aquatic program. This includes the Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services aquatics handbook "Paddle Like a Panther." In addition, the Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services aquatic matrix is included which provides information for aquatics and day camp staff in conducting safe field trips to aquatic sites. The Camp Adventure™ Child and Youth Services management plan, field trips and aquatics activities checklist is also provided. Further, the American Red Cross Instructor Activity Report is included. Next, the American Red Cross Course Record/ Addendum Instructions is also provided, followed by the American Red Cross Course Record and Addendum forms. Lastly, the American Red Cross Block Plan Template and Lesson Plan Template are incorporated as homework assignments for the aquatic counselors.
