Abstract
Today Black Hawk County seems to have a number of growing problems in the African American community high crime, alcohol and drug abuse, violence , high school drop-outs, teen pregnancies, and civil unrest. Much of this seems to be attributed to a lack of participation in positive leisure, recreation, and youth activities in the African American Community.
There has always been a problem in the African American community when it comes to participation in leisure and recreational activities. Jesse Cosby recognized this problem and tried to encourage many African American youth to participate in square dancing, tennis, golf, baseball, ice skating and other leisure activities. Cosby often found that it was easier to get African Americans involved in leisure and recreation when the activities were in their own community (P. Henderson, personal communication, June 16, 2005).
Although Jesse Cosby is a person of significance in Black Hawk County and particularly in the African-American community. For example, there is not enough literature documenting his achievements and explaining his motivation to get others involved in leisure service activities.
To address this problem, I will be conducting a life history research on Jesse Cosby. In the course of this study I will seek to provide some insight on how Jesse Cosby was able to motivated residents in the African American Community to participate in leisure, recreational, and youth activities and to uncover what motivated him to become a leader in his community in the 1940's and 1950's.
