Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the exercise adherence of participants in a university Wellness program. More specificly, this study will determine reasons why some people adhere to exercise programs and others drop out.

The subjects consisted of university students (n=l43), employees (n=l5), retirees (n=J), and their family members (n=7) who were enrolled in the wellness program fitness classes. The sample of subjects (158 females and 10 males) was limited to persons who were registered to participate in aqua trim, high impact aerobics, low impact aerobics, and step aerobic classes for the Spring 1992 Semester. A researcher generated questionnaire was used to examine the participants' adherence to the exercise program for which they were enrolled.

Results of the study showed that the dropout rate was 29.2%. The primary reason for dropping out of the exercise classes was because of time conflicts. Subjects who adhered to the exercise classes primarily did so because of the health benefits they believed they were receiving. Knowledge of the factors which have an impact on participation could help fitness/wellness specialists structure better interventions and fitness programs.
