Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to look at the history of the treatment of individuals with disabilities and how that has influenced the development of inclusive recreation. This paper will review the types of community recreation, definition of inclusion, benefits of inclusion, barriers to inclusion, inclusive recreation, and attitudes toward inclusion.

This research paper reviews the history of individuals with disabilities, including how individuals with disabilities were viewed in Ancient Greece, during Aristotle's time, during the Industrial Revolution, and during World War I and World War II. The paper also reviews federal legislation beginning with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Throughout history the treatment of individuals with disabilities has changed. As society becomes more inclusive, so does recreational programming. There is a shift in the thinking of the public as well as of recreation professionals to provide inclusive programming that enhances the quality of life for individuals with and without disabilities.
