Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of rhythm practice segments (rhythm sight words) on student’s ability to perform melodic segments containing the same rhythmic content. 5th grade band students (N=7) participated in a rhythm reading and playing pretest, post test, and practice session and were scored. A Wilcoxen-Signed rank test showed no significance in the change of test scores from the pretest to the posttest. Accurate rhythm counting does not seem to be a factor in melodic performance of beginning band literature.
