Abstract

Every day, people engage in a variety of social interactions that rely on one’s social skills. For some, this may be an easy task, however, for many others this may not be quite as easy. Social skills are a very crucial part of a child’s development as they guide social interaction and self-regulation abilities, and it is important that children develop social skills at an early age (McClelland et al., 2000). The definition of social skills is very broad. There is not one shared definition of social skills, however many of the definitions overlap in regards to the various skills they focus on. Broadly, social skills refer to various behaviors such as nonverbal and verbal communication abilities, listening skills, cooperation, working with others, self-regulation, and even the ability to solve problems (McClelland & Morrison, 2003). Individuals vary in their ability to use these skills in their daily activities and engage in social situations successfully.
