Abstract

This article explores how AI language models affect the teaching of high school writing. This research analyzes artifacts produced by high school students tasked with using AI to complete a writing assignment. A control group of students were given the same writing assignment but asked to complete it without use of AI. Several markers were found to distinguish human samples from AI ones. The use of AI improved students’ grammar at the expense of creativity and voice. This research suggests that AI language generators are best used for providing prescriptive grammar support, and that the goals of high school writing teachers in a post-AI world must include assigning writing tasks that emphasize student voice.
