Abstract
Each day over 2 billion tons of water pour into the Bay of Fundy from the Atlantic Ocean. This tremendous surge of water in the form of two rising and falling tides results in a phenomena unequalled on the east coast of North America, and rarely experienced in the rest of the world. The tidal fluctuations produce the second largest whirlpool in the world, waterfalls and rapids that are reversed during high tide, forty to fifty feet tides in some places, and tidal bores that relentlessly advance up rivers in the form of a wave of water.
The manner in which the high tides affect the environment of this region and how man has adapted to these tidal fluctuations is the subject of this paper. This observer has developed a slide-tape series featuring scenes from this region that illustrate the great range in tidal levels, and problems men face in the Bay of Fundy area.
