Abstract
For this research the author was concerned with the portrayal .l of males in literature; more specifically, the characterization of boys 1n children's books. The researcher wanted to find out if boys are represented realistically and if the characteristics of boys in fiction have changed over time. The books selected were fiction and the reading level ranged from fourth to sixth grade. The main character of each book was a male figure of approximately ten years of age. There were two time periods from which the books were selected. One grouping was from 1959-1963 and the other from 1970-1974. Other books published before 1959. between 1964 and 1969, and after 1974 were not considered. A list containing characteristics of boys was compiled. These characteristics were classified according to type-physical traits, motor skills. feeling, and health, The characters in the books were compared to the list of characteristics to see how many boys had attributes on the list. Then these findings from both time periods were compared and contrasted.
