Abstract
Accurate and timely data depicting major aspects of manufacturing are essential to allow management to exercise effective controls for investments relating to automated equipment. One specific area of automated equipment can be termed "numerical control" (N/C) . "N/C is a technique for the control of production tools by information prerecorded in symbolic form (Devries, 1971, p. 1)." l This study is concerned with gathering material on the functional use and operation of N/C equipment. Specifically, the following areas of study were:
(1) to gather historical information on N/C equipment development;
(2) to investigate who are the major manufacturers of N/C equipment;
(3) to gain an understanding of programming techniques;
(4) to gain information on what major areas of concern should maintenance management be cognizant.
This researcher has had an association with N/C equipment as a maintenance planner and as a maintenance supervisor over the past few years. Observing the maintenance problems associated with these machines has led to many interesting observations. Now, as a manager of a Mechanical Services division, the topic of N/C machining is a worthy topic of research--a worthy topic in that very little is being done to educate managers and supervisors to manage this capital asset.
