Abstract
The purpose of this literature review is to explore the concept of self-esteem and empowerment and to suggest ways of empowering women to develop self-esteem through counseling. To this end, first the review contains an explanation of the condition of women with a focus to their self-esteem. Second, this review provides definitions of self-esteem and an investigation of its importance, development, and the obstacles that prevent women from having self-esteem. Third, this paper will highlight the importance and the roots of empowerment and how empowerment relates to self-esteem. Fourth, it will explore the role of counseling in the development of self-esteem in women. Finally, this review will indicate strategies that counselors need to bear in mind with respect to counseling women who lack self-esteem.
