Abstract
In the past, it has been assumed by middle grade teachers that their students come to them with an adequate knowledge of geometric measurement concepts, since linear measurement has been taught beginning in first grade. However, the researcher has noticed that sixth-grade students seem overwhelmed by, and display a lack of understanding of, many of the geometric measurement concepts. Other educators have also found this to be true of students in the middle grades. This paper will be an investigation into the causes for this problem.
