Abstract
The following paper is a review of four patterns of verbal abuse, including the personal, manipulative and attacking nature of such abuse on dyadic relationships. The potentially destructive qualities of these negative patterns in marital relationships will be emphasized. The intent of this review of the literature is to suggest to counselors that verbal abuse needs to be evaluated with closer scrutiny.
