Abstract

In light of a decision by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists to discontinue national certification of laboratory assistants, Hawkeye Institute of Technology must determine the future of its Medical Laboratory Assistant program. Available options include the following: a) continue the one-year program b) replace the one-year program with a two year Medical Laboratory Technician program c) discontinue the one-year program with no replacement. This report examines each option within the context of the current state of medical laboratory education, manpower needs, and employability of program graduates. Development of a Medical Laboratory Technician program is proposed as the most practical response to changes in national certification. The operation of an MLT program is described and the curriculum outlined.
