Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine what effect the present image of the nurse, as perceived by the general public, has had on the recruitment of students for the nursing profession. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to evaluate how the media has presented nursing over the last two decades. The literature review also looked at what effect this media presentation has had on the potential nursing student. Several strategies aimed at changing the public 1 s misconception of nursing were identified and discussed. Implications for further study and concerns for what this might mean to the future of nursing were also discussed.
