Abstract
Helping first year teachers adjust to the reality of the classroom is an important concern of our educational system. A 1984 Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Task Force Report on Teaching and Teacher Education reveals that the most academically able are among the first to leave education. About 50 percent of those who take jobs as teachers leave the profession within 5 years. Looking at the nation as a whole, approximately 15 percent of the new teachers leave after their first year of teaching. Compare that with the overall teacher turnover rate of 6 percent.
