Abstract

We know that daily, children are being born with lifelong limitations and adults are experiencing catastrophic illness or trauma. These health-care problems touch the rich and the poor, the young and the old. No one is immune to these medical dilemmas. Though they may not be aware of it at the time, the infant born with a birth defect and the child or adult who is afflicted later in life will be limited not so much by the actual disability as by society I s attitude toward that disability. It is society that will define the disability as a handicap, and it is the individual who will suffer from this definition (Buscaglia, 1975 pp. 11-12).
